Is an N95 mask the best mask for deadly airborne pathogens such as Ebola, SARS and the most recent COVID-19?

The best protection comes from a certified, medical grade N95 respirator mask.  The ‘N95’ designation means that when subjected to careful testing, the respirator blocks at least 95 percent of very small (0.3 micron) test particles.  One important thing an N95 mask does that other face masks for sale do not do is this: when fitted correctly to your face, they create a seal around your nose and mouth to prevent airborne viruses, and other contaminants, from invading your respiratory system.  If you are unable to get an N95 mask, then the next best thing is to get an N95 surgical mask that will fit your face closely.  When I do a quick search online to buy face mask, I’m shocked to see sites offering cloth face masks for sale, as these masks do not form a seal around the mouth and nose, or filter out super tiny particles!

If you have a mask that does not fit snug and has gaps around the edges, it does not protect you or others.

Here’s how easily Coronavirus Spread can occur when you do not have a properly fitted facemask

This is an example of how easily Coronavirus contamination can occur, if you’ve bought face masks for sale that are not snug fitting.  I was in the store the other day walking down an aisle and saw a man ahead of me sneeze.  I watched as a cloud of spray flew from him into the air.  The spray flew out of his mask, because he was wearing a mask with big gaps in the sides and bottom (a non N95 mask).  Luckily I was wearing an N95 mask.

A man with his 2 daughters turned down the same aisle.  They were wearing non certified medical grade masks and would have unwittingly walked right into this spray, as they had not seen the man sneeze.  I stopped them from going further, and told them someone had just sneezed.  Thankfully I’d seen the man sneeze, could avoid walking through the spray, and then warn the man and his 2 daughters.  But what if I hadn’t been there?   They would have walked right into the cloud of spray.  This can happen anywhere.  These sort of quasi-protective face masks for sale online are inviting disease.  They defeat the entire purpose of wearing a mask.

If you think the other masks out there are safe, consider what the CDC and the WHO say on their websites.  The CDC says “:  “Surgical masks and N95 respirators are in short supply and should be reserved for healthcare workers or other medical first responders, as recommended by CDC guidance”.  The reason the CDC says these masks should be reserved for the healthcare workers is because they know these are the best face masks for airborne illness, and they know the other face masks for sale out there offer very little protection, if any, against COVID-19, or other airborne pathogens.  If other types of cloth face masks were safe, then they would be safe for the medical first responders too.  However they are not safe, which is why the medical first responders are advised NOT to use them.

This is taken directly from the WHO’s website in their information on stopping the spread of coronavirus:  “One study that evaluated the use of cloth masks in a health care facility found that health care workers using cotton cloth masks were at increased risk of infection”.

We spent weeks pouring over scientific papers, medical and research documents concerning different airborne diseases, viruses, COVID-19, and the most up to date research done of the best face masks for protection.  After careful examination of the data, we are urging our readers that when they buy face masks online, choose a certified N95 facemask, or a close fitting N95 surgical mask from a trusted site.  It could save your life.

In an ideal world, you would use a brand spanking new best medical face masks for each time you are near a possible source of contamination, and then dispose of the mask after each use.

However, due to the current shortage of these top face masks, and their subsequent price increase, many people can only get 1 or 2.  Because of this we’ve designed a protocol for our readers that helps to extend the life of their masks, and helps reduce transmission of COVID-19 and other pathogens.

Use of this Protocol will reduce your risk of viral and bacterial Contamination:

  1.  Be very careful when handling your mask.  Touch the front as minimally as possible.  Carry your mask everywhere you go, keeping it inside a clean zip lock bag.
  2.  Have another bag with protective disposable gloves.  We recommend the Nitrile exam gloves or latex.  Get a box of gloves as these should be disposed of after each use.
  3. If you are going to be around other people, like when entering a store, using the elevator or common areas in a shared apartment building, put on your mask, fit it properly to your face, taking care to touch the cloth as minimally as possible.  Put on your gloves.
  4. After doing your business, and before you reenter your home, take off your gloves, turning them inside out, and put them into a plastic garbage bag.  You can keep a bag in your car for this or outside the front door of your home. Carefully remove your mask using the straps to avoid touching the cloth.  Return the mask to the plastic zip lock bag and close it for next use.
  5. As soon as you enter your house, remove your clothing, shoes, and socks, and place them into a plastic garbage bag that you seal shut with a twist tie or something easy to open.   Have a separate set of clothes and shoes that you use just for going out.   Do not wear them inside your house.  This is done to reduce the risk of bringing viruses or pathogens picked up outside into your home.
  6. The next step is to thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water.  Reusing the masks is far from ideal, but if you can’t get enough best face masks to wear them for single use only, then this is the protocol we recommend and the one we’ve been using for ourselves and our families during coronavirus.  We too have to reuse our face masks because of the shortage.  As soon as you can, buy more N95 facemasks.  If you can do so, buy in bulk and change them often.

Here at Masksandthings.net we take human life very seriously, and are committed to protecting you, our readers, and the public, from fraud or claims that can cost lives.  Everyone matters.  Do not risk your health or life with a mask not tested and certified as an N95 protective mask, or properly fitting N95 surgical mask that forms a seal around your nose and mouth.

We don’t know how bad this is going to get, or if there will be another pandemic down the road.  Hopefully not, but this is the 3rd deadly viral outbreak during my lifetime.  In lieu of this we suggest get as many of the best face masks as you can now.  And later when mask prices return to normal, we suggest you stock up on protective masks just in case of future need.  We plan to do the same.  God Bless!
